Countertaek: Stoner Carlin bits were overrated, and his work became progressively more influential and funny from “What the Hell am I Doing in New Jersey?” going forward, with “It’s Bad For Ya” being one of his all-time best shows at the very end. There is still a void in comedy left by his death that has yet to be filled by a strong, influential, non-polite liberal comic. The ones who seem to care are either too niche (Rogan, Jefferies), too smug (Bill Maher), or become too normalized (Lewis Black). As much as I love Patton Oswalt, he’s never going to be thought of as the voice of anybody. Now if you want to talk important, influential, but unfunny comics, we always have Bill Hicks to discuss.
