Request Line: Girls, Girls, Girls

Welcome back to request line! I’m your fill in DJ yeah right. Mr. Deadly is on a world tour of Europe and the Far East but will be returning to regular DJ duties soon.

It was mentioned in passing right after it happened but I think we deserve to throw a little additional tribute and respect out to a true music pioneer who passed away on March 18th of this year.

Mr. Chuck Berry.

Once again as the resident old guy I’ve got great memories and insane fondness for the Grandfather of Rock N Roll. Berry, along with fellow contemporaries, Little Richard, Bo Didley, Jerry Lee Louis and others changed the face of rock n roll forever.

Recently I’ve been doing some studying and research on the Delta Blues and lots of folks will tell you THAT was the start of rock n roll and I’m kind of siding with them. Musicians like Charlie Patton, Son House, Lead Belly, Robert Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Howlin’ Wolf and many, many others were the originators of the standard blues exchanges for guitar that are still used to this day.

It was Chuck Berry and his fellow rockers that brought for lack of a better term “life to the party.” Their music was just so damn much fun to listen to. No blues there. Just some good damn times.

Regardless of who you feel was responsible for the music, we all know what was responsible for the lyrics and sentimentality…

Lady troubles.

Lord have mercy, NOTHING will drive a man to drink, drugs and downright foolishness faster than dealing with lady troubles.

Hell, lady troubles invented the blues if we get right down to it.

Today we will be drafting songs about girls. The original idea was to only include songs with a girls name in the title.

If we run out of those too quickly (although I think that would be the entire Chuck Berry song collection) then we can get to songs about girls in general and we can always include songs about “lady troubles.”

I’ll get us started with a double shot.

Chuck Berry – “Nadine.”

And one of my favorite LA bands, The Blasters with “Kathleen.”

One quick side note: I will be seeing The Blasters perform live at the House of Blues Anaheim on June 9th and it’s looking like I might have a spare ticket if one of the local crew wants to tag along.

Alright folks, let’s get to it.

Tell me who done you wrong!

and finally, back to MOAR. One of my favourite early 2010s bands, A Silent Film, covered this live on satellite radio once, and it made me cry so hard I had to pull the car over.

Bloody Lethal

Last one… I’m sad to say I must be on me way. So buy me beer and whiskey boys, I’m going far away. I’d like to think of me returning when I can… To the greatest little boozer and to Sally Maclennane
