Your “Nope, I Was Wrong” Tuesday Evening Open Thread

Today is slower than yesterday.

NFL News:

  • Mike Tomlin is not a fan of touchdown celebrations. This is apparently news.
    • Given how many timeouts he has to waste on extra points, I can see why.
    • He wouldn’t have that problem if he had Hue Jackson’s team.
  • Michael Bennett turned himself in to authorities on assault charges stemming from allegedly knocking over a paraplegic stadium attendant at the Super Bowl.
    • The sheriff has already guaranteed a mistrial by poisoning the jury pool, by referring to Bennett as “pathetic” and “morally corrupt” during the announcement of the charges.
  • Passed unanimously, the new rules defining a catch include:
    • Control of the ball.
    • Two feet down or another body part.
    • A football move such as:
      • A third step;
      • Reaching/extending for the line-to-gain; or
      • the ability to perform such an act.
    • It eliminate the “going to the ground” aspect of the catch process.
    • In other words,

  • The mayor of London wants a Super Bowl.
    • Sadiq Khan clearly sees the draw of The Big Game©®™, but he will have to wait until some team starts demanding a new stadium from their city.
      • I don’t think the Spanoi clan could handle the gray London winters. Dean seems soft.

Finally, as you can see from the banner, the coaches took their annual Winter Meeting photo – minus Messers Belichick, Carroll & Harbaugh. Andy Reid, as usual, was the only one to take the whole palm tree environment to heart.

which many on Twitter are comparing to “Florida Stanley”.

Boy, does the NHL sure know marketing. A week to go until the playoffs, and they can still afford to have no national broadcasts to pump up potential playoff matchups. As always, fuck Roger Goodell, but really – FUCK GARY BETTMAN!

That might be a little too much, but OK.

Things are rarely as Black or White as we’d like them to be.
Or as Black and White as would make things easier on ourselves.
Stop taking the fucking easy way out and think for yourselves.
Jeebus.

Sorry Unsurprised, but I can find no evidence for the seething hate you seem to want to spew on this issue. I’m happy to read more if you’ll supply the references, but right now I see no reason to keep searching.

Seems like a socially meaningful thing to me. Even if I am a big stupid gun owner.

It’s not clear who started #WalkUpNotOut

The origins of #WalkUpNotOut aren’t entirely clear. The Indy Star suggests a viral Facebook post in February by a retired teacher in Texas named David Blair helped start the movement (Blair later told Quartz that he supported the students protesting):

In his post, Blair urges students to “put down your stupid phone” and instead talk to that “kid over in the corner, alone.” Blair warned that a student eating lunch alone, or one who is constantly disrupting class “could likely be our next shooter.” So, he urges students and teachers to befriend such an individual to make him or her feel welcome and to possibly head off a future tragedy.

A Maryland youth minister and mom may have also helped spark the movement, posting more detailed instructions for “walking up” instead of “casting stones” on Facebook about two weeks ago, according to the Carroll County Times.

“Instead of walking out of school on March 14, encourage students to walk up — walk up to the kid who sits a lone [sic] at lunch and invite him to sit with your group; walk up to the kid who sits quietly in the corner of the room and sit next to her, smile, and say Hi; walk up to the kid who causes disturbances in class and ask what he is doing; walk up to your teachers and thank them; walk up to someone who has different views than you and get to know them — you may be surprised at how much you have in common,” she wrote in her message, which went viral.

And just so ya know….the pro gun nuts latched on after the fact. Because Mr. Blair phrased his original statement a certain way,. Innocently enough, yes. But that’s people.

That’s what people do. We look for that niche. That crack. That way to weasel our way in. To try to find the meaning we want, rather than the meaning which was intended. Crazy evil assholes, especially.

But the movement was pure. Its intentions were pure. It was NOT started by gun nuts.

Problem is, you’re reading the fallout two weeks after the fact. The gun nuts didn’t start it. They co-opted it. Or at least they tried to. And by not educating yourself, you’re allowing that to endure.

But should we let them ruin what was, in fact, a beautiful sentiment and effort? Started by an educator, and maintained by other educators?

If we do, then that’s our own fucking fault. For a lack of effort on our own part in educating ourselves.

Don’t you think?

And frankly….

All of you who gave the knee jerk “like” to the original knee jerk hatred, and yet have stayed as far away as possible from my well-reasoned, my well-researched, and my well thought out points to the contrary…?

Well……You can all suck my fucking balls.

I have no use for you.

Fucking sheep.
