Your “We Are The Skyscraper Condemnation Affiliates” Saturday Evening Open Thread

I’ve never made it a secret that The Kinks are my favourite band and the first concert I ever attended. It’s the 50th anniversary of this album, and the $160 vinyl box set that came out is on my Christmas wish list the second it gets transferred to digital or CD.

Convair (a merger of Consolidated Aircraft and Vultee Aircraft) produced both the ugliest aircraft in U.S. aviation history and the most beautiful aircraft in U.S. aviation history. All the aircraft were produced by highly skilled engineers and craftsmen. Beauty is subjective, so I’ll show you a few examples.

PUGSPLOSION!

But first a little nappie.

Brick Meathook

We have a pug at work. I’m convinced they are actually space aliens, although I like our work pug. The sound of a dozen pugs breathing must be astonishing.

Unsurprised

It would be preferable if they were aliens.

Sorry. I couldn’t help it. Polly shouldn’t be.

Got her degree in history from Trump University.

Unsurprised

Denver lucked out on that late game.

I saw Mid90s. That was a kick in the balls. It was like watching home movies if we ever had money for a camcorder to make them.

So then I saw A Star Is Born, which was really good. I think the universe is trying to tell me to get off my ass and put some real effort into my art.

Saw The Kinks in 1979, right after they released their live album One For The Road, and then I saw them again in 1980, both times at the Capital Centre in Landover MD. They were both great shows, because that’s what The Kinks did. However, in introducing the songs, Ray Davies said the exact same thing he said on the album, word for word. I mean, I get it, but at least write a slightly new speech for each year, and then repeat that verbatim in each city. Other than that, fantastic show and fantastic band. I can’t say I have a favorite Kinks song (there’s too many), but I love Muswell Hillbillies, both the album and the song. Here’s the song (the song is called Muswell Hillbilly):

Viva La Tabula Raza

Celluloid Heroes remains my all time favorite Kinks tune. But like you said, there’s so many.

Brick Meathook

I love Celluloid Heroes. Ray Davies is a poet (in fact, there was very serious talk of making him a poet laureate of Britain).

Viva La Tabula Raza

When I was about 5 years old, I can remember reaching over and cranking the volume up on a tune on the radio when my mom was driving me to school in her 1949 Dodge when we lived in Sacramento. I finally flashed on that memory about ten years later when I heard the tune for the first time since, and remembered the tune. There’s not many riffs like the riff from You Really Got Me. I guess you could say it’s my first musical memory.

Unsurprised

I swear I’ve heard a similar story about SSD.

Brick Meathook

By the way, this song is told from the point of view of some poor English waif after the Second World War who only knows North America from the movies.
