You know it’s a unique day when I had to fight WordPress to get it to accept February 29 in its calendar. Anyway, I was bored so here a few

Leap Day Historical Facts!

  • 1980 – Gordie Howe scores his 800th NHL goal.
    • He’d score one more in his career, giving him 801 & the NHL record until Wayne Gretzky breaks it.
    • Because he was a Hartford Whaler when he did it, there’s only one sound effect that matters:

Other important February 29th events:

  • 1796 – The Jay Treaty comes into effect between Britain & the USA.
    • Properly known as The Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, Between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America (the Jay Treaty is not so much a mouthful), it helped settle trade disputes after the Revolution as well as the the boundary between Canada – technically, “British North America” – and the USA vis-à-vis the 13 colonies.
    • A side effect is that it allowed, via its language & subsequent legislation, Native Indians born in Canada to be entitled to freely enter the United States for the purpose of employment, study, retirement, investing, and/or immigration.
      • Article III of the Treaty stated that Great Britain and the United States would allow First Nations people to live on either side of the newly established border and to freely cross the border.
      • For immigration purposes, the person must be 50% aboriginal, as such evidence would include either an identification card from the Ministry of Indian and Northern Affairs or a written statement from an official of the tribe from which they or their ancestors originated.
      • It’s a right still enforced today.
  • 1916 – In South Carolina, the minimum working age for factory, mill, and mine workers is raised from twelve to fourteen years old.
    • There were strenuous objections from the SC senators, who argued for state & local governance over a federal imposition.
    • In context, marriages under age 16 were only prohibited by state law in 2019.
      • The age of consent had been raised in South Carolina from age 10 in 1880 to age 16 by 1920.
  • 1936 – The “Pocket Rocket” Henri Richard is born.
    • Fifteen years younger than his elder brother, Maurice “Rocket” Richard, he played 20 years for the Habs & won 11 Cups, the most by any one player.

I once stood in line at a Starbucks in Venice CA and George Carlin was in line in front of me.

yeah right

We need to stop looking at our screens.
We need real life interaction.

We need to walk outside and see how beautiful our dying planet is.

Appreciate the day when it’s warm and beautiful.

Appreciate it when it’s cold and unforgiving.

We need to walk more.

We need to accept more.

We need to really live.

We really need a beer.

ballsofsteelandfury

The planet is not dying. The sun maybe.

yeah right

I’ve got a feeling the sun is strong at least for another billion years or so.

My pension will be well paid out by than.

Unsurprised

In five billion years the sun will become a (smallish) red giant and consume Mercury, Venus, Earth, the moon, and edge Mars.

Then we will go from being composed of stardust to becoming starlight.

Gratliff

As Carlin put it: the planet is fine. The people are fucked.

Unsurprised

I just finished off a six pack and the coronavirus is in my neighborhood. I did my 12,000 steps anyway.

I AM GETTING HAMMERED IN A BAR IN MONTREAL IN ORDER TO DEFEAT THE TERRORISTS AND THE DEADLY MICROSCOPIC GERMS. GOD BLESS AMERICA.

ballsofsteelandfury

Damn right

Unsurprised

I had huevos rancheros today. It’s been a while and it seemed to be lacking something, but it also had avocado.

yeah right

Scenes from the Sunday Gravy outtakes.

There will be no avocado.

There will be no iceburg lettuce – why the fuck would you want something cold and wet on your burger?

There will no no cauliflower.

I love huevos rancheros

ballsofsteelandfury

AHA!! It’s a burger!

The chicken participated in this breakfast dish but the hog was committed.

BTW, lettuce on a breakfast sandwich sounds pretty odd until you try it, and then you realize it is the most perfect addition ever.

The Celebrity Family Feud SNL clip below reminded me of when Kristen Stewart played Gisele in a similar skit. She can be fine as Hell when she wants and has pretty good taste in women.

Sean Miller getting his second T And giving UCLA FTs to tie (plus possession) as they make a run.

I’m fully on board to fire Miller. The unfortunate fact, however, is that Arizona doesn’t have anyone in place — in the administration or the athletic department— who understand the importance of getting the next coach right. That institution is as broken as the CFPB under Mulvaney.
