Derby Days Reignited (and Other Lesser Matters)

God help me, but I think Everton actually goes into this Derby matchup with a puncher’s chance (7:30, NBCSN).  The Redshite will no doubt be focused after their 7-2 thrashing away to Villa…but thhat veneer of invincibility has faded.  More importantly, Don Carlo has this bunch of Toffees believing in themselves.

Ordinarily, one could have a moan about not having supporters inside Goodison Park – but really, the weight of collective expectation can overwhelm.  And they are quick to start moaning if events start poorly.  Just focus on the football.  It’s been ten years to the day since Everton last beat the Shite.  That streak of futility needs to go on no further.

You get two more NBC/NBCSN fixtures today (though 3 of Sunday’s 4 are Peacock-only).  Chelsea host Saints in the 10:00 window (NBCSN), and a hammering could be imminent.  Chelski have too much attacking talent to struggle much longer.  Not at home, to the likes of these, anyway.

How good are Arsenal, anyway?  You’ll get at least a partial answer in their spotlight dance (12:30, NBC) trip to the Emirates.  Man City are in 14th, and a desperately wounded/cornered animal.  This will likely make better viewing than the #NuAIDS-altered JV slate.

Very Disappointed Dad Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (almost spelled that right on first go, swapped the “k” and the “j” is all) takes his Red Devils to Newcastle for a very intriguing finisher (3:00, Peacock).  Very early days, but Barcodes are in a comfortable (for them) 9th, while United enter the weekend in 16th, with a -6 goal differential.  Even with a game in hand, that is the kind of form that gets one the sack.  I am expecting a reaction today, but then again, I didn’t expect what I’ve seen to date in the least.

Villa are away to Foxy Footy tomorrow (2:15, Peacock), with those Midlands Twats 2nd in the table, match in hand, Prem-leading +9 GD.  Talk about the unexpected!  Spurs/Hammers (11:30, NBCSN) is the only non-streaming matchup.  There is a full-NBCSN Monday Night Footy double-dip (hey, matching the NFL schedule – THREE DAY WEEKEND WOO!!!)

Auburn (-3.5) at South Cakalaky (Noon, ESPN)

The Chickens have proven they are WAY better than #NuAIDS-ridden Vanderbilt.  Otherwise, they’ve been ass-flavoured ass.  War Damn Eagle is worthy of GAMBLOR hailing.

Kentucky (+6) at Tennessee (Noon, SECN)

I was hoping for MOAR value here, as both these teams are inconsistent af.  But Kenfucky has beaten UT like twice in 125 years, so less than a full 7 ain’t gonna do it.  Bet it’s fun, though.  Perhaps challenge Headliner to a game of horseshoes?

Texas A&M (-5) at Mississippi State (4:00, ESPN)

Did I mention that this was an underwhelming slate?  The fact that this is the only match close to watchable (no, I don’t count NC State/Duke, even though it will occupy my eyeballs) tells you all you need to know.  Classic let-down game for Bonfire Cult, and Dread Pirate Leach is 10-15 times better a coach than Rick Perry clone (but fatter) Jimbo Fisher.

Speaking of fat, this made me chuckle:

Georgia (+4.5) at Alabama (8:00, CBS)

Yes, I only previewed 4 fixtures (for good reason), all SEC (same).  But really, this one is the whole ball of wax.  Should Nick Saban’s #NuAIDS cancel this, dunno who will be sadder.  Hippo or the teevee folks.

I know Canada has colleges. But it just occurred to me for the first time in my life. Does Canada have college football? Or do y’all just gravy train on ours? At least that way, your colleges don’t have to waste a bunch of money on it. I’m guessing there is at least college hockey and curling.

Game Time Decision

There is the NCAA version of sports up here,. All the sports that you would expect. For the futbawl its the Canadian rules and not the American ones. They are all currently on hold due to the pandemic. They just cancelled the winter term sports, so nuthin going on up here until the fall term next year, at best

Dunstan

No athletic scholarships in Canada. So even in hockey, Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union hockey generally consists of guys who weren’t good enough to get NCAA scholarships and didn’t think their professional prospects were good enough to delay college and go the junior hockey/minor leagues route.

At any given point in time, you can probably count the CIAU alums in the NHL on one hand.

So it’s probably more comparable to NCAA Division 3 or whatever — anybody playing those actually is a student first and an athlete second. There is no big money CIAU sports. The football championship (Vanier Cup) is televised but doesn’t get big ratings, and you actually have to look hard for college scores on big Canadian sports sites.

Game Time Decision

Vanier is always a fun watch.

Thank you both for the illumination.

Came back from a hike with the dog, (too nice a fall day to stay in all day), to catch most of the second half of the Arsenal game and I think my time would have been better spent finding some drying paint to keep an eye on.

I attended a Roma-AC Milan match at San Siro with a couple British and American friends about 15 or 20 years ago. It was a weird experience compared to US sports attendance. Anyway, I knew as little about the sport then as I do now, but I remember being somewhat bored, and my Brit buddy dismissed it as a “chess match.” I do remember that everyone was kind of jazzed that the Kojak guy (wiki sez Pierluigi Collina) was refereeing the game.

So close to getting that crucial 2nd goal for Man Shitty.

Attending toddler gymnastics after an edible is very entertaining. If I take some of these falls I would be in a body cast.

No, it’s not just you. The edit option is a bit tricky.

Bang on it with a hammer. That always works, it’s science.

Game Time Decision

I remember going in with my kids. Of course there’s a huge play structure that they want help getting up to the top with their totally nawt flexible dad. Still surprised that I didn’t hurt myself in that thing.

Nice, I think I’m gonna follow your lead, but with something less politically charged… Something like an old Discovery Channel documentary on the battle of Dien Bien Phu (aka “strategy, shmategy… being French is enough”.
Fun fact about the battle – among the units caught in that siege were two mobile brothels, ’cause FRANCE!

Horatio Cornblower

Dien Bien Phu, proving that wisdom of that well known strategy of seizing the low ground.

There’s a great book about the siege, ‘Hell In A Very Small Place.’ Really good read.

bk109

Duly ordered (I only needed to see that it’s from the same author as Street Without Joy and The Two Vietnams). Thanks for the suggestion!

Meanwhile, at Casa De Bk109…. me and the wife are looking through a gun catalogue (for an US shop), while rapidly losing hope for humanity (and we’re both gun owners, lol)…
Seriously, who THE FUCK *needs* a belt-fed semi-auto rifle?!

herodotus450

Oh a Brit telling Americans they don’t need guns? We’re not falling for that one again, buddy!

bk109

Worse, Gun AND TANK-owning Eastern European knock-off Irish… Seriously, belt-fed rifle (and I know how bloody easy is to “tweak” a M249 and M240) is just lunacy….

Horatio Cornblower

Well how else do you suggest I compensate for my micro-penis!?

bk109

As a sane gun owner I like to point out that most of us aren’t compensating for micro-appendages, nor have vivid wet dreams about re-enacting that scene from John Wick at home (dunno about anyone else, but … 999 is there for a bloody reason and a gun’s only good for a last resort…. or a relaxing day shooting at normal bullseye targets in a safe and controlled environment)… That said, people buying that problably should just get an AMG Black or a Jaguar like a normal tosser and be done with it 😀

Horatio Cornblower

On the other hand, my neighbor has let three of his cows run loose through the entire neighborhood for the last several months, so it’s not like I couldn’t find a use for a belt-fed semi-auto.

Warthog

Salt lick, sledgehammer, and a bandsaw will fix that right up

bk109

Only if we’re talking about the neighbour… The cows aren’t to blame that their owner is a cunt…

bk109

Actually, I’m questioning the product, not the legality, lol. Frankly, for me the only solution for gun ownership is….(dramatic pause) to allow universal gun ownership, so long as you can actually prove that you can in fact be trusted with owning a gun – ie firearms safety (with regular re-ups), psych and medical evals at reasonable intervals and the like (in fact, in my personal case my employer has me doing once a quarter evals to even be permitted to carry a weapon on premises and that’s with them giving me a secondary responsibility as armed response personnel on site).

For the 249S it just feels silly to have a semi-auto belt fed weapon that’s designed for sustained large volume of fire and not accuracy, when you’ve got better’N’cheaper options around… Now, if it was a legal pre-1987 full-auto model – then that changes things ’cause doing mag dumps iz FUNz… Especially in Arizona, with a Minigun XD

Also, not watching the Arsenal game, ’cause I’m in a good mood…

bk109

And yet workplace sexual harassment isn’t a bookable offence in proper footy… Shame

Horatio Cornblower

Well, that tie didn’t last long.

Seems the tenants are really good this season. Tight pants Lampard can only get so erect.

/due to the pants you see.

Is GREGGGGGG looking to head shot Gase three seconds after the whistle? Maybe he’s coveting that sweet sweet interim GM job….

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/30128510/new-york-jets-defensive-coordinator-gregg-williams-takes-veiled-shot-team-offense

Fronkenshteen

Jets organization needs to be decapitated at Woody Johnson and rebuilt from ashes with new ownership. Short of that, relegate their fucking asses for all I care anymore. You cannot convince me this team is operating in good faith, on behalf of its fans and ticket holders, with the goal of achieving victories. It simply isn’t true.

blaxabbath

I dropped off the ballots for the Mrs and myself Thursday. I don’t know if it’s bc COVID and city hall but it was a drive up that went faster than any Starbucks drive thru. Fast forward to this morning and I realize just how great yesterday was —I’ve put this election behind me now (In terms of the vote, not the counting) so if America wants to give me more tax breaks instead of having less than 50 kids in a classroom, that’s democracy. But my point is, having my ballot in feels great (also seeing the returns in my state are looking blue — which is an absolute necessity at this point).

I saw some guy posted a “we’re here for early voting only a 45 min line!” and I thought it perfectly sums up MAGA — you choose to waste an hour to vote on-site and throw your ballot in the box rather than just do it the easy way by pulling up in your car and putting it in the same box. Sure, mail-in ballots sound like a fraud machine in Tucker — then, in reality, you’re standing there like a fucking moron in 90 degree weather making a whole day of something the rest of us take care of on our way back from lunch. Like the old lady in the office who likes to print out her excel sheets and total them up on the calculator because, even though it has never been wrong, she doesn’t trust the computer to the one most baseline task machines do best — accurate arithmetic.

All that to say, I now see Joe Biden texted Hunter in Feb ‘19 after his son lamented to his father that he was an untrustworthy addict who hurt his father’s political career and Joe texted him, “good morning my beautiful son. I miss you and I love you.” and now I’m really regretting not casting my vote for the child raping facist who won’t have schools safely open by the time my two year old is ready for kindergarten.

Gratliff

Of course, it’s worth noting that anything regarding voting in this country is YMMV. I live in a tiny township in mid-Michigan, so even if I wasn’t already doing absentee voting, it would still be like 5 minutes max. However, Michigan’s courts just overturned a decision from a few weeks ago so now a ballot that gets delayed in the mail and misses election day no longer counts. Georgia is currently setting up American Gladiators events around each of their polling places where the gladiators have been replaced with militia types with guns and police K-9s, also with guns. Texas now has one ballot box per county, located in the middle of the county’s largest lake, and requires you to also insert a property deed as proof of identity. On the bright side, though, Jacob Wohl is facing like 15 years in prison in Michigan for election fraud, so hopefully we get that bit of schadenfreude.

rockingdog

I read something saying that more than 25 million ppl have already voted in this election
yay early voting!

E-VAR-TON is pretty funny to me.

More like Bangladesh and the like, because it’s a labour-intensive, but simple process to make shit that can use way cheaper labour than GYNAAAAAAAAAA… Plus, no pesky OSHA (and equivalent) rules and regs to worry about 😀

Just checked – my M’gladbach jersey is from Indonesia and the Arsenal kit is from Georgia (the non-Failcons one)

Every bar you walk into has No ColoUrs on the door. Every 1st convo is Who do you support Hoops or Gers? I chose the Protestant Edinburgh side as they are shit. Grandpa was a devout Dundee FC Supporter, and my local club was Ayr United.

bk109

Smart choice, given that the Scots reaaaaaaaally take the whole ‘gers and Celts thing a tad too seriously XD

Also hi y’all

bk109

Dunno/Don’t care tbh 😀 I’m just barely coming back to life after sleeping for (literally) 30 hours, so I’m more concerned with not yawning myself outta existence 😀

bk109

Nah, just a 400 hour workday (normal hours, the billable ones are approaching 4 digits 😀 ) trying to get as much shit done as possible before the inevitable second NuAIDS national quarantine nukes our on-site plans and taint-punts global logistics (unfortunate it’s no longer a “you’ll have your server chassis’ in 24 hours or less” world out there)
