So, is the AFL on yet? Because I found this doozy of a tweet yesterday.

I am willing to bet that gentleman engaged in some recreational psychedelics from time to time. But it did get my hockey card collecting brain wondering – are there AFL trading cards?

Turns out – yes.

And they are just as garishly banal as you’d expect.

So shiny.

In fact, the first AFL card dates to 1894, and much like the US Honus Wagner card (c. 1909) it was also made by the American Tobacco Company.

Unlike the Honus Wagner, the Will Crebbins card was only worth $10,100 dollars in 2018. The most expensive Honus Wagner ever sold was worth $3.12 million.

Still – look at these. Aside from the sport they look exactly like the cards from those eras I collected in hockey.

Magnificent. That’s what a collectible card should look like.

Nice.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I don’t know which sport but I’m for it

Horatio Cornblower

Downhill skiing, specifically slalom, and she is an absolute monster at it.

Mr. Ayo

It still breaks my brain watching them cross blocking the gates.

Horatio Cornblower

Shiffrin was cutting them so close her boot straps were getting caught up in a couple.

Mr. Ayo

Crazy the precision she (and all of them, really) have while going almost 40mph down a hill.

Horatio Cornblower

Likely closing the night with this one.

Love this brewery, but this is not a great example of a West Coast IPA.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

What’s with the gloves, Johnny Cochran?

Horatio Cornblower

That’s just the image that came up on an image search. No one needs to see my den.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Tonight’s beers have been 7.1, 10.5, and 9.2. What’s next?

Look, I don’t care if you are 9.2%, don’t call yourself a vanilla stout if all i taste is coffee

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

> 9.2%

But enough about Britt Reid’s B.A.C. before he collided into a stopped car, sending a young child to the hospital with life-threatening injuries…

SonOfSpam

He balanced it out with adderall, so stop with the shaming.

Horatio Cornblower

Clearly I need to head to Treehouse soon.

(after two monkish IPAs)

Horatio Cornblower

Oh those guys are good.

Horatio Cornblower

That link takes me to a page to order beer. Do you think they’ll deliver to CT at 2:00 am?

SonOfSpam

We need coast-to-coast vacuum tube beer delivery.

DO SOMETHING BIDEN

Horatio Cornblower

Certainly better than the rabid squirrels I’ve been using.

Dunstan

I’ve got Dogfish Campfire Amplifier going. A little worried that it would be a milkshake sweetness bomb, but it’s pretty well balanced

Horatio Cornblower

I’m not a huge fan of their beers, but I do love Dogfish’s commitment to putting pretty much anything into a recipe and seeing what happens.

Horatio Cornblower

I finished my beer. Anyone know what to do now?

ArmedandHammered

Make sure it has a companion so it won’t get lonely?

BC Dick
Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

“[Horatio] poured a beer down his other throat with the plan that it would head the previous one off at the pass, join forces with it, and together they would get the second one to pull itself together. Then all three would go off in search of the first, give it a good talking to and maybe a bit of a sing as well. He felt uncertain as to whether the fourth beer had understood all that, so he sent a fifth to explain the plan more fully and a sixth for moral support.”

SonOfSpam

Then what? Don’t leave us Dungying!

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I think after that point they start eating steak.

Dunstan

+42

Horatio Cornblower

I like the way you think/quote.

Hitchhiker’s Guide, right?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Restaurant at the End of the Universe, but yes.

Horatio Cornblower

I don’t remember any of the names other than the first book, so I just refer to the whole series as Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Why yes, I am a moron.

SonOfSpam

(I’ve only seen the movie, so you’re at least less of a moron than at least one of us?)

Horatio Cornblower

Probably not; I wasn’t even aware there was a movie.

SonOfSpam

Split decision from movie-knowers, but I liked it.

Dunstan

I thought it was ok. About the best you can expect from a major Hollywood production — of course they’re going to turn it into a love story, that’s just baked into the cake.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

It’s not my bag, but meth?

SonOfSpam

WHO’S BAG OF METH IS IT? STOP RESISTING STOP RESISTING

Horatio Cornblower

Not since 1991, but that would give me the element of surprise.

Horatio Cornblower

The UConn women are 22-1 and have the Big East Rookie of the Year and the Big East Play of the Year. It’s the same girl!

Paige Bueckers is going to make something of herself in this basketball thing, you mark my words

ArmedandHammered

So she has sound fundamentals?

Horatio Cornblower

She does. She’s also just ridiculously good. I’ve laughed out loud watching her hit just stupid shots on multiple occasions.

ArmedandHammered

Was making a Futurama reference.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

We watched an episode of Downton Abbey, and now we’re watching Victoria. I have figured out the perfect food to accompany all this stuffy English television.

Nachos!

Joe Lunardi is telling Duke fans not to lose hope, because in 2011 a team needing to win their tournament to even get to the tournament not only won that tournament, they went on to win the. whole. fucking. thing.

That team? UConn in 2011. But Duke doesn’t have the balls of my plucky little state school, so they can forget that happening. Have fun bowing out in the 2nd round of the NIT, you blue-blood assholes.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Men’s or women’s?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Hahahahaha as thought the UConn women’s team were ever in doubt of making the NCAA tournament.

Horatio Cornblower

I can see the confusion, as between them they have 15 titles, including both of them winning in 2004 and 2014, the only school to do that ever, let alone twice, a fact that UConn fans, including your truly, will never, ever, shut the fuck up about.

SonOfSpam

So (oh right how the fuck etc) I was just on the Twitter, and grit WR Ryan Switzer is waiting to find out what’s wrong with his 9 month old son. He woke up crying “covered in his own blood” and he’s COVID-positive and the docs are trying to figure out where the blood is coming from. Sorry to be bad news guy, but spare a thought for his family and enjoy your drinks that much more.

Horatio Cornblower

Jesus fuck, that is terrible.

Senor Weaselo

Hey, maybe St. John’s is back on the cusp of maybe being on the bubble before they lose to, like, DePaul again!

SonOfSpam

Is Felipe Lopez still the point guard?

Horatio Cornblower

One of my UConn Twitter follows just described St. John’s as the Big East’s Keyzer Soze.

Or pregnant. Or both the twins are pregnant. You twisted SOB.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I was told we have too much beer in the fridge, and I know some reinforcements are coming from Armed and Hammered, so time to pound some 8% ABV IPAs and see what happens.

Horatio Cornblower

You rang?

Had this for the first time today. It’s amazing. Had to wait in a line four cars long to get it, too.

My life is hell.

ArmedandHammered

I think it should arrive Monday. I think Sharkbait got his yesterday, at least I hope he did.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Louis Dejoy is fucking up my alcoholism

SonOfSpam

Mine is supposed to be a Monday arrival too. BFC lives right across the street from where I hang out and watch people through binoculars.

Dunstan

Got some afternoon drinking in, so it’s about that time when I can either stop drinking now, or else strap in for a lengthy evening.

/glances at humidor
//well I tried

Dunstan

I’m sure I didn’t invent this, but I made a couple of “mezeracs” today: a mezcal-based version of the sazerac. I liked it, although I think next time I’m going to do a chile liqueur rinse instead of the absinthe.

Dunstan

Indeed. I switched from mezcal/tequila to cognac and now Bunnahabhain. I don’t tend to go with big peat monsters when I smoke cigars, so I’ll either stick with that or switch to stout.

litre_cola

I have a 1st cask edition of that stuff from my wife that bought it from an auction over there. It is Salty and Peaty.
comment image

Dunstan

Not familiar with that one, but I’m jealous now.

litre_cola

It is very fierce. She replaced a bottle that I bought when I lived there that my fuckhead roommate drank all of it. Of course I didn’t know until he was gone as the bottle was in its sleeve. I was fucking furious.

Horatio Cornblower

I believe that you’re legally allowed to track and kill someone who does that.

BC Dick

I prefer the second cask.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

A whiskey and coke tastes a lot classier when you drink it out of a glass.

Tonight I’m drinking out of plastic.

Also I just ate two Carl’s Jr. thickburgers.

Dunstan

That’s living the high life

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

My menu selection at Carl’s Jr. was entirely predicated on which coupon I had provided the largest amount of money saved.

Horatio Cornblower

GameStop tanked, huh?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

I actually walked away from GameStop like a month ago close to breaking even after it looked like the party was over. I’m thrilled for the people who toughed it out; it’s doing quite well now.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

I’m still a little down but TO THE MOON

Horatio Cornblower

I have to buy new headphones tomorrow, so hang in there!

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

And then rebox them and sell them to SonOfSpam at a profit?

Horatio Cornblower

Shhhhhhhhhh.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Did an LA first today–went to Randy’s donuts for the first time. Tony Stark wasn’t there but the maple was very good.

ballsofsteelandfury

The OG by the airport?

The cochinita pibil was a success — my thanks to yeah right.

found a funny:

the characters in Jaws can’t hear the score so it’s not actually that tense for them

Doktor Zymm

On a nice boat, good weather, swimming. Makes sense

Doktor Zymm

Shitty croissants are still good croissants though, will have some of them, some rye, and tomorrow will come soon

litre_cola

They are a super pain in the ass to make – Mrs. Cola

Doktor Zymm

I believe it, and unless she enjoys it or wants to conquer and it, may she have the best in purchased croissants

litre_cola

I love them so she made them for a special occasion, it is a 3 day process. She loves baking but that was a bit much.

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

The Dr. Mrs. has come to the same conclusion. It’s just too much work to do as an amatuer.

ballsofsteelandfury

Are we still taking about croissants?

Doktor Zymm

I’m 100% in favor of gmo, but this shit predates gmo and is just dumb. There should not be strawberries that are more than one bite (or two if you’re savoring or being dainty). They are less delicious monsters

ArmedandHammered

Whut?

Doktor Zymm

I picked tiny, tasty strawberries thatmy grandma grew. Now I buy a pint of strawberries and it’s like four mutant giant fuckers, that have more fiber than flavor and ship well. Strawberries are fucking delicate, they shouldn’t ship well and they shouldn’t show up out of season being all shiny and shitty. Good fruit or no fruit!

ArmedandHammered

The way that was written made me think you were replying to another comment, but I do completely agree with your argument.

herodotus450

More, give me more! I’ll not be satisfied until I’m living in a giant, house-sized strawberry!

Doktor Zymm

Wait, this was an animated lady! You aspire to be Strawberry shortcake! Brb will find pics

Fuck, it’s like eating breast implants

Game Time Decision

I’ve always hated out of season strawberries. Its like eating red cardboard. The worse berry in the summer is better than any of the ones you can get at this time e of year.

bk109

Blerp, given that everyone appears to be ded, litre’d or worse… eating dinner with their families I think I’m gonna have to crack open the emergency romcom stash to keep me company, while wifey is cursing the Leafs, refs, the Zamboni driver… etc..

And the lucky movie tonight is…. “The Cutting Edge” with the mom from OTH and the bombardier from Memphis Belle

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

“Oh that’s a good movie.” – Ray Lewis

bk109

Turns out I’ve seen this one and it’s actually quite good… not “You’ve got Mail / Slepless in Seattle” good, but quite enjoyable… also fuck it, might as well rewatch Mail too (especially that it now hit Netflix here) .

In case anyone else’s interested – https://www.amazon.com/Cutting-Edge-D-B-Sweeney/dp/B07NLHLTQZ

Doktor Zymm

Holy shit you just evoked my youth. I loved that movie and watched it multiple times on VHS from maybe ages 9 to 12?

Old AFL cards are spectacular. Just as good, if not better than the hockey cards of the 70s and early 80s. I’m going to have to dig some up…

BTW, AFL starts in less than 2 weeks!!
