Your “That Was Fun – Got a Smoke?” Monday Open Thread

Well, did you get enough hot draft action in the last 96 hours? There were 7 full rounds of NFL pickings – including one very fun liveblog – and the sadness of the NHL draft lottery. Chicago, always a fun town, looked like it put on a pretty good show, and hopefully we might get a report on how all that went. The NHL draft lottery was just depressing, as all 7 Canadian franchises had sponsored draft parties at Boston Pizza – a reminder that with great failure comes shitty food, full-priced draft Buds, and a pathetic reason to wear the team jersey.

Lesser footy note: 5000-1

Before we get to a DFO week of hyper-analyzing the draft, one important NFL note: Deebo’s back.

See? They play the Patriots in Pittsburgh on October 23rd. Pretty boy better tape those knees. Hopefully, the Stillers can add Bernard Pollard by then.

NFL Draft: Three days of NFL machinations led to 253 players being drafted, including your 2016 “Mr. Irrelevant“, Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles cornerback Kalan Reed. (USM Pro Day fact: he had a 41.5 inch vertical leap.) The honour of picking last was expected to be Denver’s, and they prepared for that fact by prepping a jersey. I’d hoped they would have taken Gronk’s brother, just as another F-U from last season. But Denver actually traded the pick to Tennessee in an exchange of 5th & 7th rounders on Saturday, so the guy who runs the prize had to do so with the right helmet, no player, and the wrong coloured jersey.

A fact the Titans quickly sorted out – too late for the stage, but in time for the kid’s victory party:

However, I think this will be his most important memento from the weekend.

Even if he never plays, he can still call “scoreboard”.

I vaguely recall picking a kicker in the draft contest, so screw you Tennessee. Anyway, good for him on achieving his dream, and I hope the kid has fun at his party. Might as well take whatever you’re offered in life, especially since it’s more than Maurice Clarett ever got. Find a list of all previous Misters here, and a top-20 ranking here.

One other, brief draft note: Doug Baldwin had a good reaction to the Hawks draft:

Seahawks GM Nobody is going to wear No. 24 NFL.com

I’m guessing he has no problem with anyone taking Percy Harvin’s #11.

NHL Draft: The Leafs “won” the first overall pick, but the big winner was Winnipeg, which got to move all the way up from 6th to 2nd. The big losers were the Oilers (dropped from 2nd to 4th) and the Canucks (3rd to 5th), so those end-of-season tanks were for nothing. The Oilers have been rebuilding through the draft for 10 years yet still finished 29th, so I don’t think I’ll be trading my Seahawks tickets for the Canucks anytime soon. Meanwhile, I continue to hate-watch the NHL playoffs. If anyone cares,

2016 NHL Draft Order: (Top-5)

1. Toronto Maple Leafs
2. Winnipeg Jets
3. Columbus Blue Jackets
4. Edmonton Oilers
5. Vancouver Canucks

Apparently, the projected #1 pick – Auston Matthews – isn’t thrilled about going to Toronto, whose own fans are going all Barstool Sports in preparation for his eventual donning of a Leafs jersey. I guess he was hoping his hometown Coyotes would win the loser lottery. [Fun fact: rather than play as an amateur or in a Canadian junior league, he chose to play pro in Switzerland at 17.] I’m secretly hoping for another Eric Lindros situation. Meanwhile, the kids from Finland can’t wait to get to Winnipeg and Columbus, which tells me everything I need to know about growing up in Turku.

Well, that’s enough draft talk from me, let’s check out tonight’s playoff action:

NHL: Washington @ Pittsburgh – 8:00 (Series tied 1-1)

NBA:

  • Hawks @ Cavs – 7:00 (Game 1)
  • Thunder @ Spurs – 9:30 (Game 2)

This concludes your Monday Beerguyrob draft weekend roundup. STAY TUNED FOR MOOSE’S FIVE-DAY FORECAST!

I’d kill for 86 here in Portland. I’ll settle for going down to L.A. this weekend.
