I have to say, when I saw the photos in the cache for today’s Sunday Gravy, I knew the Commentists were in for a real treat. WineWife has a Gochujang recipe for short ribs that will make you slap your mama. When she announces it is upcoming I immediately put in the order at the local butcher – none of that Costco bulk meat for this – and do whatever she asks on the day in question.

I know my role.

She makes extra sauce, because the fattiness of the ribs makes for an excellent drizzle on , well, anything. As Brother Right says, using it on wings will just open you up to newer & better flavour combinations in your life. The rib sauce makes them more sweeter than hotter, which suits me fine because I can’t handle the spices much anymore.

It’s not just a getting old thing; I never really could handle the heat. So, not being a fan of the fire down below, I’ve tended to avoid most spice when dining. But dishes like these have at least given me a chance to advance my palate.

I wanted to make a fire down below reference, but Seagal just didn’t work.

Tonight’s … entertainment?:

  • Monster Energy Supercross:
    • Round 15 from Salt Lake City – 7:00PM | NBCSN
  • Smokey And The Bandit – 8:00 PM | Sundance
    • The Bandit, a charismatic bootlegger, takes a bet to ship a truck full of beer from Texas to Arkansas. While pulling off the stunt, he falls in love with a woman engaged to the son of a dyspeptic sheriff who takes it upon himself to stop Bandit.
  • World War II: Race To Victory – 9:00PM | HIST
    • To mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, an examination is provided of the race, not only to win WWII, but also to gain power and an ideological stronghold.
  • 30 for 30 – 9:00 PM | ESPN / TSN
    • “Long Gone Summer”
      • Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa reflect on the 1998 baseball season in which they ignited the passion of fans and non-fans alike in a thrilling home-run race that soared past Roger Maris’s 37-year-old single-season record.

There’s also “WWE Backlash”, if you get the Network. Likely a terrible event, it will be noatble for being their second pay-per-view “event” to take place without crowds in the essential service state of Florida. If you wanted a look into the mind of a 70+ year-old who doesn’t know what’s going on in the world, take a peek. Or watch a Trump news conference.

No offense to Gratliff, even if he is an Eagles fan and therefore technically a cousin of Beelzebub, but I will be goddamned if I leave to go to bed and leave that as the last image on this post.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

But they said Obama was the antichrist…..

ballsofsteelandfury

Due to access issues, I’ve decided to write the Bond Films of the 90s post ahead of the 80s post.

Would it be weird to publish them out of order?

Unsurprised

No

WCS

For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy (giggity), The Living Daylights, and License to Kill are probably my four favorite Bond films. Goldeneye was good, The World Is Not Enough solid, Tomorrow Never Dies sucked.

Go ahead and do the 90s, and give the 80s the time they deserve.

Don T

I got into “Hannibal” on the netflicks.
That used to be network tv? It’s great! Mads Mikkelsen is a god and the guy who does Will Graham is great. Scott Thompson’s in it!!!!
Mads also preps meat like I do. Well, offal in his case, but you know.

ballsofsteelandfury

KITH Scott Thompson?

Unsurprised

Yes, according to IMDb

Don T

Yes. Criminally underused, but still!

Unsurprised

Jose Andrés was the cooking consultant for the show.

ballsofsteelandfury

Holy shit, really?

ballsofsteelandfury

That makes sense. If there is anyone that could cook human and make it delicious, it would be him.

Gratliff

Copy-pasting what I always say to someone starting Hannibal:
Hannibal is great because when you start watching it, you know it’s going to be underwhelming if it’s not the most gory thing ever made for network TV by a country mile and then you find out it’s the most gory thing ever made for network TV by a country mile.

It even has a weird queer relationship angle built entirely on mutilating fellow humans. It’s fascinating what they did with that show. Mads made the character his own. You don’t even think about Anthony Hopkins while watching it. That door scene was so fucking good.

Unsurprised

What was Gillian Anderson’s role in season 2?

Also, that makes me miss American Gods. That first season ruled, then Bryan Fuller, who was the guy who made the Hannibal series, left and I couldn’t bother with season 2.

Don T

A big YEP on Mads as Lecter. He’s very, very understated. Has much more menace than both movie Lecters. And visually, the movies have nothing on the series. I love it.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Has anyone seen War Dogs? We’re giving it a shot, and early review is….well, I’m on the site commenting while watching, aren’t I?

Game Time Decision

its OK.

Don T

Mindless fun for 40 minutes, then bleh with an OK ending.

Unsurprised

It’s fine. Ana de Armas is in it.

Unsurprised

I can’t stand Miles Teller, so him being the protagonist doesn’t do it any favors. Especially when you see the guy he’s playing. But Jonah Hill fucking rules in that movie.

Horatio Cornblower

Meh

Game Time Decision

Made roasted brussel spouts with dinner. Soo good

Gratliff

This is propaganda. There is no such thing as a good brussel sprout.

Game Time Decision

Streamed = shit
Roasted = awesome

And each to their own

Don T

I like ‘em steamed too, but roasted are delicious.

Gumbygirl

I made those last night, with my boring chicken leg quarters. They were good. If you don’t like Brussels sprouts, I feel sorry for you!

Horatio Cornblower

Hated them as a Kid, acquired a taste for them as an adult. The lesson, as always, is that children are stupid.

Horatio Cornblower

/Watching ESPN 30-30
Oh good, Bob Costas has deigned to come down from the mountain and weigh in on the steroid era.
/makes dismissive wanking motion until my hand falls of.

ballsofsteelandfury

Bob Costas was Joe Buck before Joe Buck was Joe Buck.

Gumbygirl

I found your comment and tried to upvote it, but they demanded I join Reddit. A bridge too far! I upvoted it here instead.

Senor Weaselo

I saw it on mine and didn’t pay attention to the user, so success?

Gratliff

Seems like a good night for a rewatch of Return of the Living Dead

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

In the movie, they sent more cops. In real life, the cops would have ignored the call to go lounge around in a Congressman’s office that had been “burglarized”.

Redshirt

In their defense, I think we’ll all accept lazy incompetence from cops rather than what we’re getting now.

Horatio Cornblower

Won’t somebody think of our pensions!?

Dunstan

Today is National Bourbon Day.

That’s right, bourbon. Brownest of the brown liquors. What’s that? You want me to drink you?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

“But I’m in the middle of posting in the open thread…”

Gumbygirl

Turns into National Bourble Night.

ballsofsteelandfury

Speaking of, has anyone heard from Fozz?

yeah right

Well let’s participate shall we?

I had just written a beautiful detailed description of this section, and then I hit “refresh” instead of “post.”

It is all lost.

Trash

Hey, someone bought my autobiography.

ballsofsteelandfury

Learned Pigs and Fireproof Women intrigues me.

Brick Meathook

Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women is fantastic and I had a big section on that. It’s where I first learned of Le Pétomane (Joseph Pujols – the greatest entertainer ever) who is also an inside joke in Blazing Saddles. The late great Ricky Jay was a sleight-of-hand magician (not an “illusionist” like those Vegas clowns) and there is a movie of the stage show he would give, Ricky Jay & His 52 Assistants, directed by David Mamet, that is available on YouTube and should be seen. It is amazing and will lead you to learn more about Ricky Jay.

Brick Meathook
Horatio Cornblower

Ricky Jay was the best. Gone way too soon.

ballsofsteelandfury

Just watched the whole thing. That was awesome. Thank you!

ballsofsteelandfury

Checking it out now and will probably get the book

Gumbygirl

I have all of those Onion books and the Calvin and Hobbes. I stopped buying books years ago because we move so often, but I will make exceptions for stuff like that. I wish the library would reopen!

Don T

If you ever wanna get rid of the Ricky Jay, DM.

…and now comes the biggest flaw in Last Jedi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3gciAsltCw&t=14m10s

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

[covers ears, begins screaming “na na I can’t hear you”]

Redshirt

Either because you’re one who loves Last Jedi or because you feel there’s another flaw worse than this?

Redshirt

Somehow…someway….I found yet another plot hole in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. When Leia ordered Poe not to engage the Dreadnaught (or whatever it was called), and he refused the order, why did the bombers and rest of the fleet go with Poe? Leia is a General, Poe is a Commander. Also, I severely doubt the fleet would disobey Princess Leia Organa.

But lets be honest, there are tons of flaws with this movie. If I ever win a billion dollars from the lottery. I’m redoing this movie. Between all the bullshit, there is elements of a great movie in there. Its just covered in the bullshit.

tl;dr I miss sports.

ballsofsteelandfury

Have you seen my preferred version?

herodotus450

The big twist is when it turns out they’re NOT siblings.

Redshirt

Luke: “No, we can’t. We’re twins.”
Leia: “No, we’re not! Our parents adopted us and we were separated before we could grow up together. We’re not related and we have sibling connection to each other.”
(Luke force rips their clothes off)
Luke: “Let’s go.”

ballsofsteelandfury

Luke: “No, we can’t. We’re twins.”
Leia: “Step-twins. Or have you not been watching Pornhub lately?”

Not gonna lie-this new iPhone is just as good at preventing my friends from contacting me as the other 5 versions were.

Gratliff

Sounds like someone got the AT&T deluxe package

rockingdog

LOL

Horatio Cornblower

That’s what I tell myself, too.

Gratliff

Dunno how many people here do the indie gaming thing, but there’s an absolutely massive bundle on itch.io. $5 for 1300+ games benefiting NAACP’s legal fund and Act Blue’s community bail fund. Racists out there right now grabbing it for the deal alone. Celeste, Minit, and Night in the woods are all worth the cost by themselves. Some other gems like Anodyne and Oxenfree in there as well. Just too many to go through.

Starting the house hunting in earnest today and the first house we looked at was flanked by neighbors who both had hand-made Happy Birthday Trump signs in their yard. Meteor can’t come soon enough.

litre_cola

I feel you. Ours is for sale and we arent looking until we get an offer. I can’t wait until we move away from The Stomp-alots upstairs and Billy Beagle downstairs.

Viva La Tabula Raza

On these signs, was correct spelling a feature?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Like, who the fuck does that? I was a pretty big fan of Obama and celebrating his birthday would never have even occurred to me.

Gratliff

Had the same discussion in the car. They’re on some glorious leader bullshit. Also had this downstate
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQi57XCy3eg

Redshirt

Even Adolf Hitler and the citizens of Nazi Germany would go “Das macht mich unwohl.”

Gumbygirl

My mom’s birthday was the same as Obama’s, my dad’s was the same as McCain’s. Weird coincidence, or something more sinister?

Redshirt

Your mother is one that makes good, eloquent plans but doesn’t execute them when she has the power to implement them and your father is somehow both a square and a rebel?

Gumbygirl

My mom was a lovely, kind lady, and my dad was smart but kind of an asshole. I’m a mix of both, although I wish I were more like mom.
