It’s been a slow start to the long weekend. We spent Friday visiting friends for dog walks, and today we spent the afternoon drinking with others on the lawn of their apartment building. In one respect it’s become quite civilized – you can have a drink on the lawn & no one looks at you funny, because we are all desperate for maintaining some measure of human interaction we are willing to ignore behaviours that would normally result in raised eyebrows and the occasional call to the police.

No matter how often you’ve done it.

The dog content you need right now comes from furloughed BBC Sports commentator Andrew Cotter, who has delightfully decided to post video of his dogs eating,

and competing for the same toy.

Truly, an English accent can make any contest sound both more exciting and fair.

    • Semi-finals – 5:00PM; 7:00PM

    • The case of SNL performs sketches from remote locations, including Weekend Update.

Finally, I want to personally cheer the return of Beastmode, and his oeuvre “Hard Road To Nowhere“. If you didn’t recognize some of the names, don’t worry. Some of them predate many of us, and date in fact to the exile from the old place. Take this as an opportunity to familiarize yourself with a legend, and go back & read all about how we first ended up here.

Here on Holy Saturday, the most Holy Saturday in the Christian calendar, we must remember Our Savior’s words on this very Holy Saturday:

“Let me out of here! Hello?! Let me out! I’m not dead! Move this rock! I’ll cure you! Let me out!”

Burn Gorman was so goddamn good in Torchwood. I miss the super dark Dr. Who spinoff.

Here’s future Doctor Peter Capaldi playing a government clerk walking into his kids’ bedroom to murder them and his wife before killing himself because the British government is trying to make peace with an alien race that abducts children because it can convert them into a valuable narcotic, and they’re offering up his kids as part of the deal. Very different show from Dr. Who.

I liked him in Layer Cake, first movie in which I noticed him.comment image

Gratliff

That’s one I haven’t seen yet. He’s in seemingly every prestige TV series these days, though. Pretty sure everyone one of them is a villain. Even his Torchwood character that was one of the heroes was a scumbag until he died and then started acting right. He’s an incredible shitheel.

Viva La Tabula Raza

Layer Cake is the movie that landed Daniel Craig the 007 role. It is fucking awesome. If you can track down the book, it is even better than the movie. Plus, early roles for Ben Whishaw, Sienna Miller, Burn Gorman, and Tom Hardy among others, and Colm Meaney/Chief O’Brien as a badass motherfucker. Truly a brilliant film.

So. Hello gentlemen and (potentially) ladies.

I’ve had social anxiety all my life, so hiding in my house all the time is nothing new to me. But I am starting to get bored out of my mind. I’m ready to heavily arm myself and take over a small country. Maybe Montserrat.

So an interesting (and horrifying) thing about Holodomor is that while they were starving Ukrainians to death by the millions by seizing pretty much all their crops, it was no match for the broken Soviet supply chain, so most of the food they were taking from the Ukrainians never actually survived the train ride back to Russia anyway. 90 years later, with technology that would have seemed impossible, our own supply chain has been smashed to shit and we’re seeing waste in numbers unseen in human history. I’m not smart enough to really know what could have been done better. It feels like between the corporate farms and governments that they should have been able to find a way to temporarily reorganize the whole thing to provide direct relief. We live in an economic and political system that’s spent the last several decades heralding how dynamic and flexible everything is, and it was broken in half the minute business-as-usual stopped being feasible. I’m legit terrified for what the aftershocks of these decisions are going to do to the lower class in a system that was already brutalizing it.

There is probably going to be suffering on a scale which we haven’t seen since Pol Pot took charge in Cambodia/Kampuchea.

And this is a relatively non-lethal pandemic compared to what it could be. Societal specialization is so fragile.

The war between not killing human beings vs. not killing country clubs really heating up in Michigan. It’ll be interesting to see what the next wave of gubernatorial and state legislature elections bring. Even in states that appear to be doing things the right way, it’s gonna be chaos. Record unemployment and quarantines and literal piles of bodies are gonna make for some wacky electoral politics. Sort of feel like everyone’s just gonna get thrown out of office because no one knows what to think of any of it.

Gratliff

Except Florida. I’m pretty sure DeSantis wants everyone in Florida to die. They may bury him at sea.

Moose -The End Is Well Nigh

Should they burn him? Just to make sure.

Burn him and then bury the ashes at sea. He would have wanted it that way.

OK, I want it that way.

(watching Spider-Man: Homecoming)

I’m glad that the role of Tony Stark helped to turn Robert Downey, Jr’s like around making him a treasure, but the role of Tony Stark (post-cave sabbatical) is responsible for several of the mistakes in the Marvel Universe:

– Iron Man: not noticing that his #2 man is working with terrorists (waived because it was pre-cave sabbatical)
– Iron Man II: becoming very secretive about dying causing things to go out of control allowing the bad guys to building robots and kill people.
– Avengers 1: During movie? Fine. After movie? See Spider-Man: Homecoming.
– Iron Man III: calling out a terrorist organization out and being surprised when they give a ASM Hello.
– Avengers 2: Building Ultron.
– Captain America: Civil War: Siding with the government and blaming the Avengers for murders that wasn’t their fault when they were trying to prevent events ranging from The End of the World As We Know It to The End of the World Proper.
– Spider-Man: Homecoming: too busy thinking about nailing Aunt May, yet not actively involved in Peter when he was getting restless and not informing him in his plans one Spider-Man caught on to the bad guys operation. Oh, and screwing a innocent, hardworking family man out of a city contract to remove wreckage from Avengers 1 without any compensation giving him the motive and initiative to become a bad guy.
– Avengers 3: Not swallowing his pride and calling Captain America when he realized that a guy who beat Hulk, Thor, Loki and the rest of the Asgardians was coming to Earth to bring about the End of the Universe As We Know It AND not stopping Star-Lord from screwing up their plans of defeating Thanos which they were literally five seconds away from doing.

Thankfully his death in Avengers 4 will help to prevent him from making things worse…oh wait…

– Spider-Man: Far From Home: trusting a teenager with high-tech glasses that can easily and affably control and destroy most things with a simple voice command.

Updating the “Everyone Go For A Walk And Then Talk About It” thing from the last post, the dog and I did 5+ miles through the woods. Saw a bluebird and played with a gorgeous Irish Setter puppy.

I need to find somewhere remote enough to walk the dogs in peace soon. The parks are getting flooded by people with cabin fever trying to kill me. I imagine an order will come down to shut them down soon enough.

I ordered up a pizza and a bottle of cab for curb service pickup at my local wine bar. Since I was out I went to the liquor store and added a couple of 1.75’s to my stockpile. Also stopped and picked up a pint of ice cream at the local Kwik-e-Mart.

Hey! I did the exact same 45 minutes on a relatively unused highway north of town. It was just good to get out there.

Posted this at the last minute on the Ted Thread, figured it’s maybe worth reposting here since it might get seen.

Not sure why this crossed my mind. About 40 years ago I read a story in Omni magazine by George RR Martin that really stuck with me. Not sure if it’s available these days, but if you run across it in any form, it’s really fucking cool.
