DFO Art Week: Request Line / Radio

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

Welcome to the final installment of DFO Art Week.  Today I’m combining the art theme with Request Line / DFO Radio to showcase some of my favorites of the many images I’ve put together for the series over these four years. The theme for today’s Request Line is “Music as Art”, and that can be as abstract as you like it to be.  Feel free to post songs that fit your personal definition of “art”.  The example I’ve included at the bottom is from an art installation I’ve seen a couple of times at the Broad called “2nd Hand Reading” by a South African artist named William Kentridge.  The music is produced by a composer named Neo Muyanga, a fellow South African.  I’ve mentioned this piece before; the theme of “tear and repair, end with love” is something that really speaks to me personally, the way that all great art does.  Thanks for following along this week.

Worth it just for the guitar: Silvio Rodriguez- Óleo de mujer con sombrero

One of the very top works (IMHO) about the least interesting subject for art: the creative process. The Who – Guitar and Pen

ThurberHerder

A love song to music. Worse places to be than on a rooftop groovin along.

Composed to be played indefinitely while waiting for the Dalai Lama to appear. The quiet intersecting polyrhythmic melodies symbolize peace; the tight coordinated percussive sections war. I think it special to have an instrumental piece say something about the nature of societies in both war in peace.

This is, without question, FUCKING ART!

Did something happen in Canada today? Did the queen die? It seems all the Canadians are on edge.

Fear not Canada! You still live next to the United States of America! We are armed to the teeth, from the largest thermonuclear tipped 7000 nautical mile range missiles to the smallest concealable assault weapons, we got your back. As long as you don’t piss us off you’re safe as baby seals.

DRINK!

Would be remiss if I didn’t congratulate Rikki on this week’s art posts – great work!

This isn’t a Family Guy redditt thread. SHOO!

SonOfSpam

Fine, I’ll go back to my subreddit where we talk about how great white people are and everything feels safe and normal.

scotchnaut

Very obvious I’m in a bad spot right now. I’m checking out.

SonOfSpam

Title track to a really great album (warning: do not play immediately after a breakup).

SonOfSpam

Pretty song, pretty lady.

What about Aztec Camera?

Shoutouts to Elvis, Edith Piaf, Tom Waits, Chris Marlowe among others. I was into The Blue Aeroplanes way before they never became relevant.

I think you hit a guy that had a really shitty Friday. I’m so pissy I can’t apologize yet even though that’s the right thing to do.

GET THIS GUY A GIMLET BEFORE HE GOES FULL CANADIAN AND STARTS APOLOGIZING FOR NOTHING

Calling Mona Lisa “a basic bitch” is definitely art.

Best tune referring to photographs belongs to A Flock of Seagulls? It’s true.

SonOfSpam

Gonna go see him in concert on 9/11. Never forget.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Why isn’t this whole post Art Garfunkel’s music?

SonOfSpam

Art Schlichter will give you 3 to 1 on that possibility.

theeWeeBabySeamus

OK, that made me laugh.

SonOfSpam

I’ll bet.

theeWeeBabySeamus

So would he.

This was definitely on the shortlist.

A pretty and literate-to-the-point-of-pretentious song from Paul Simon? Quelle surprise!

SonOfSpam

Gonna take this literally; this song title refers to a stretch where Picasso painted almost entirely in shades of blue, even though the song’s about feeling blue (depressed). Of course, it could also be about why Smurfette won’t go swimming.

scotchnaut

This is a great take.
