Balls of Steel’s AFL Beat – Midweek Special!

I know you’re disappointed that, for travel-related reasons, your weekly dose of AFL Beat will be delayed.

In an effort to tide you over, I offer this little analysis I did in which I asked the question:  What if the NFL used the AFL system to determine playoff seedings?

I compiled the standings for the 2015 NFL season and sorted the teams the way the AFL would under its tie-breaking system of Points For divided by Points Against.  To maintain some kind of meaning for division championships, I decided that each division winner was guaranteed a playoff spot, but that was it.  The results are below.  First, the AFC:

NFL Rank AFL Rank Team W L T % PF PA AFL%
3 1 Cincinnati Bengals 12 4 0 .750 419 279 150
2 2 New England Patriots 12 4 0 .750 465 315 148
1 3 Denver Broncos 12 4 0 .750 355 296 120
5 4 Kansas City Chiefs 11 5 0 .688 405 287 141
6 5 Pittsburgh Steelers 10 6 0 .625 423 319 133
7 7 New York Jets 10 6 0 .625 387 314 123
4 6 Houston Texans 9 7 0 .563 339 313 108
8 8 Buffalo Bills 8 8 0 .500 379 359 106
9 9 Indianapolis Colts 8 8 0 .500 333 408 82
10 10 Oakland Raiders 7 9 0 .438 359 399 90
11 11 Miami Dolphins 6 10 0 .375 310 389 80
12 12 Jacksonville Jaguars 5 11 0 .313 376 448 84
13 13 Baltimore Ravens 5 11 0 .313 328 401 82
14 14 San Diego Chargers 4 12 0 .250 320 398 80
16 15 Tennessee Titans 3 13 0 .188 299 423 71
15 16 Cleveland Browns 3 13 0 .188 278 432 64

The thing that stands out right away is that, and I’m really sorry for this, Redshirt, but the Bengals would have gotten the #1 seed instead of the Broncos.  Another team that got screwed is the Jets, who got screwed in the NFL by being better than the Texans but left out because of the shitty AFC South.  Since I am keeping the division championship playoff guarantee, the Jets get screwed here too.  One last thing to note:  The Cleveland Browns, NOT the Tennessee Titans, were the shittiest team in the conference.   I think you will agree this makes a lot of sense.  Now, on to the NFC:

NFL Rank AFL Rank Team W L T % PF PA AFL %
 1 1 Carolina Panthers 15 1 0 .938 500 308 162
2 2 Arizona Cardinals 13 3 0 .813 489 313 156
3 3 Minnesota Vikings 11 5 0 .688 365 302 121
6 4 Seattle Seahawks 10 6 0 .625 423 277 153
5 5 Green Bay Packers 10 6 0 .625 368 323 114
4 6 Washington [*Redacted] s 9 7 0 .563 388 379 102
7 7 Atlanta Falcons 8 8 0 .500 339 345 98
9 8 Detroit Lions 7 9 0 .438 358 400 90
10 9 Philadelphia Eagles 7 9 0 .438 377 430 88
11 10 New Orleans Saints 7 9 0 .438 408 476 86
8 11 St. Louis Rams 7 9 0 .438 280 330 85
12 12 New York Giants 6 10 0 .375 420 442 95
13 13 Chicago Bears 6 10 0 .375 335 397 84
14 14 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 6 10 0 .375 342 417 82
15 15 San Francisco 49ers 5 11 0 .313 238 387 61
16 16 Dallas Cowboys 4 12 0 .250 275 374 74

The six playoff teams from last year remain the same although the Seahawks switch spots with Washington because winning the division doesn’t provide a higher seeding anymore.  The interesting bit lies with the St. Louis Rams, who the NFL ranked as #8 in the conference but which, under the AFL system, would fall all the way to 11.  This, to me, makes a lot of sense as the Rams sucked major ass last year.  Maybe this would show ownership that Jeff Fisher is not that good of a coach?

Under the NFL playoff system of 6 teams per conference, but using AFL rankings, the matchups in the playoffs last year would have been:

AFC Byes:  Cincinnati and New England

Wild Card Round: Houston at Denver, Pittsburgh at Kansas City

NFC Byes:  Carolina and Arizona

Wild Card Round: Washington at Minnesota, Green Bay at Seattle

Now, assuming we take some mind-altering substance and expand the playoffs to 8 teams per conference, but use the AFL playoff system, the matchups in the First Week would have been:

AFC

1st Qualifying Final: Kansas City at Cincinnati (Loser plays Week 2, Winner gets bye to Week 3)

2nd Qualifying Final: Denver at New England (Loser plays Week 2, Winner gets bye to Week 3)

1st Elimination Final: Buffalo at Pittsburgh (Loser is eliminated, Winner plays Loser of KC-Cincy)

2nd Elimination Final: NY Jets at Houston (Loser is eliminated, Winner plays Loser of Denver-NE)

NFC

1st Qualifying Final: Seattle at Carolina (Loser plays Week 2, Winner gets bye to Week 3)

2nd Qualifying Final: Minnesota at Arizona (Loser plays Week 2, Winner gets bye to Week 3)

1st Elimination Final: Detroit at Green Bay (Loser is eliminated. Winner plays Loser of Seattle-Carolina)

2nd Elimination Final: Atlanta at Washington (Loser is eliminated. Winner plays Loser of Minnesota-Arizona)

Now, isn’t that WAY more interesting?!?

BTW, I also sorted out the teams in terms of draft position.  Instead of the Titans picking first, it would be the Browns.  A lot of other picks would be shuffled.  Here is the table for the non-playoff teams from last year:

NFL Rank AFL Rank Team Name
31 32 Cleveland Browns
32 31 Tennessee Titans
29 30 Dallas Cowboys
30 29 San Diego Chargers
26 28 San Francisco 49ers
27 27 Baltimore Ravens
28 26 Jacksonville Jaguars
20 25 Miami Dolphins
24 24 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
22 23 Chicago Bears
23 22 New York Giants
18 21 St. Louis Rams
21 20 New Orleans Saints
25 19 Philadelphia Eagles
17 18 Detroit Lions
19 17 Oakland Raiders
15 16 Indianapolis Colts
16 15 Atlanta Falcons
14 14 Buffalo Bills
13 13 New York Jets

There is quite a mix-up of order here, which I’m sure you will all enjoy discussing in the comments.  Tell me why we shouldn’t implement this if, and when, the National Disgrace thinks we should expand the playoffs.

Balls somehow lost his bio and didn't realize it. He's now scrambling to write something clever and failing. He likes butts, boobs, most things that start with the letter B, and writing in the Second Person. Geelong, Toluca, Barcelona, and Steelers, in that order.

Today is Ted Ginn’s birthday. He celebrated by repeatedly dropping every slice of birthday cake handed to him.

I’m very intrigued by this and would like to know more. So, how does the AFL standings work, exactly?

Sill Bimmons

Wins and losses first, in the event of a tie you take the team’s Points Scored and divide it by the team’s Points Against.

The team with the higher number stands higher on the ladder.

The Jets fucked themselves in an easily winnable game with several Harvard farts in the second half.

I am glad they don’t use this system.

Also; that guy is NOT British.

That still cracks me up every time.

And still, the Titans were the only team that made Johnny Couch Surfer look like a serviceable QB.
