Balls of Steel’s AFL Beat – Round 13

Ok, so since there are only 6 games this weekend, that means I should be able to get the AFL posted at the regular time, right? Well….

Welcome to Balls of Steel’s AFL Beat!

We do our best around here, that’s all I can say.  Let’s get right to the action!  This is the first of the Rounds with Byes, so the Adelaide Crows, Carlton Blues, Collingwood Magpies, Gold Coast Suns, Richmond Tigers, and the St. Kilda Saints all get a rest.  Ironic that this is the Round where Dok Zymm decided to stay up late and start watching again.  The first game of the Round, the now traditional Friday Night Footy (Friday morning in North America) game was back showing decent teams as the #1 North Melbourne Kangaroos took on the reigning champions Hawthorn Hawks.  After losing to Geelong last week and to Sydney two weeks before, another loss would seriously question their premiership credentials/hopes.

Well,

I’d advise Sunrisesunrise to keep his SHINBONER spirit UP!  That’s really all you can do after the Kangaroos went down to the Hawks by 9.  Here is a perfect example of why the AFL is much better than soccer:

Mofo tried to bait the referee into calling a free kick to get the ball back.  Nice to see that the ref 1) got the right call, 2) communicated clearly to the players, and 2) had other umpires available to reinforce his call.

On proper Friday night, the first game was an expected blowout of the Brisbane Lions by the visiting West Coast Eagles.  Lately, the Lions’ pattern is to start out playing well and then to fade out during the course of the game.  This time, the fadeout happened after the first quarter as the Eagles soared (I’m sorry) past the Lions and ended up winning by a score of 131-82. Have I mentioned that I LOVE alliteration?

No, this is not a highlight of the NBA finals, despite the video’s title:

Apparently, a “bag” is a large amount of goals.

Later that night, Fremantle took on the Power at home.  Even though they have sucked more ass this year than (/does a Google search, //hard drive crashes, ///has to reboot) this, the Dockers have traditionally been strong at home.  This time was no different as they won AGAIN!  The final score was 86-69.  Nice!

Port started out very well

like really well

but the Dockers took the game over in the third.  Sometimes, it’s just your day:

The last game on North American Friday Night had the Geelong Cats playing the Western Bulldogs in the other marquee matchup of the Round. I watched the entire thing and was nicely rewarded with a tremendous 100-43 Cat victory.  This, combined with North’s loss to the Hawks, vaulted the Cats to the top of the ladder!  The Cats’ Daniel Menzel set the tone early:

and often:

while the rest of the team got in on the action:

and even the umpires helped out:

Let me just clear a couple of things up:  1)  The only thing that matters is if the ball is completely outside of the line so it was the right call.  2) I will include any highlight that has delicious wordplay like this one.

This

is normally where I introduce you to a new AFL footballer.  Instead, I would like to use this space to show the stark difference between AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan and Roger Goodell.  On the eve of last Round’s Monday Night Footy game, which doubled as a fundraiser for motor neurone disease, the chairman of Collingwood made a joke on a major Australian radio station about drowning a female journalist.  To give you some context, the fundraiser consisted of celebrities going down a slide into a pool of ice water:

The backlash was instantaneous and Gillon issued a strong statement against it.  From the AFL website:

I want to say a few words about the comments made on radio last week about one of Australia’s best sport journalists, Caroline Wilson.
Last week was a great week in the history of our game:

• We announced licenses for eight clubs to be part of the new national women’s league.

• With three other sporting codes we signed a leadership commitment to work with Our Watch to combat violence against women and children.

• On Saturday night, two of our clubs participated in a game dedicated to White Ribbon.

But in that same week, we also had comments made on radio that were disparaging and insulting to a woman who has done so much for our game – breaking down barriers for women journalists and being a role model for many in our industry.

In the past, we might have just ignored the comments as part of the culture of footy.

We might have said that Caroline is tough and resilient.

Well, that is not good enough.

We can’t say we are committed to making and leading change if we don’t step up and call this out.

Words and jokes have incredible power.

The fact that the comments were made on radio a week ago and were not called out is an indictment on everyone working within football.

The fact that we can still argue that this might have been done in jest is an indictment on our sport.

I understand that the men who made these comments feel horrified that they could be construed as creating an environment that makes sexist behaviours or a culture of violence against women more acceptable.

But the truth is, these kinds of comments do.

The AFL is committed to a relationship with Our Watch because the statistics about violence against women and children are truly shocking.   Family violence is the highest contribution to death and injury of women aged 15 to 44.

And casual language and jokes about threats to women are part of the problem.

I became a Male Champion of Change to lead on issues of equality  – but the reality is I have a lot to learn –  and am still listening and learning.

We are all learning that everyday comments cause harm and help create the environment to allow more mistreatment of women to occur, without consequence.

Footy has to be an increasing part of the solution.

We have a lot to be proud of at the AFL in regards to these issues.

Women make up half our passionate supporter base. Women are involved at every level of our game.  We will have a professional women’s league starting in 2017.

But we still have so far to go.

And our sport must lead.

I recognise the AFL has an important role in influencing community attitudes and I am committed to use my influence to change the conversation about violence against women.

The conversation this week was a stark reminder to me of how much change is still required for women to feel truly welcomed in our code and reinforced my commitment to supporting change.

I look forward to continuing the AFL’s work towards gender equality.

Do you picture Goodell ever putting anything like that out?  To top it off, the Richmond Tigers’ players were so offended by the radio station that aired those comments without issuing a subsequent apology that they decided to boycott it.  What did Gillon do?  He SUPPORTED THEM!

Do you see Goodell ever doing that?!?  Fuck and No.  Reason # 8901 that the AFL is run better than the NFL.

There were only two games on North American Saturday night and they were both mismatches on paper.  The Sydney Swans hosted the Melbourne Demons while the GWS Giants traveled to take on Essendon at the Etihad.  The weather was horrid in Sydney, which made the score closer than it otherwise would have been.  As it is, the 86-31 margin was pretty impressive. In the nightcap, the Giants took care of the tough and scrappy Bombers, but only by pulling away during the fourth.  The final score was 117-90.  Here are some highlights of both games:

I REALLY miss playing in the rain!

Orazio Fantasia may just be my new favorite player.

750 career goals.  That’s amazing!  Let’s take a look at the ladder, shall we?

Due to the byes, it’s a little difficult to read anything into the standings.  The only thing I know is that it’s nice to be at the top. Even if it’s only temporary.

Here is next week’s schedule:

Thursday June 23

Adelaide v North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval (2.50 AM)

Friday June 24

Collingwood v Fremantle at MCG (2.50 AM)

Richmond v Brisbane Lions at MCG (8.40pm)

GWS Giants v Carlton at Spotless Stadium (11.35pm)

Whoa, there’s a Thursday game now?!?  WTF?  Shit, work’s going to be a bitch this week!  Oh well.

Balls somehow lost his bio and didn't realize it. He's now scrambling to write something clever and failing. He likes butts, boobs, most things that start with the letter B, and writing in the Second Person. Geelong, Toluca, Barcelona, and Steelers, in that order.

Look forward to this post every week. Better late than pregnant I say!

Will any Canuck be doing a CFL beat? I give not many fucks about anything CFL but it would be entertaining.

Go Blue Bombers, I know Sill can get behind this.

Goodell would absolutely make those strong statements and take that decisive action!*

*As long as it was against a Straw Man concept or a player who wore his uniform incorrectly or added a personal message on his uniform about a deceased family member.

I met ‘Sheed when we were both in high school.

Even then you could tell the guy was just better at life than most people.

I am feverishly masturbating working on a takedown of Bill Simmons’ new steaming pile of excrement.

I hope to have it up this evening.

A taste:

“Maybe it’s that Tom Brady is so FUCKING CLASSY and such a FUCKING GENTLEMAN that he doesn’t want people to know that he may have reflected on his real opinion … of some of his co-workers.”

The best part? THAT’S NAWT EVUN SIMMUNS TAWKING

Stay tuned…

Unsurprised

Is that part of Affleck’s “epic rant” I’ve seen mentioned?

Teddy's Bridge Over Troubled Water

Still rooting for the Collingwood Magpies due to their badass unis. They’re not like… the Australian version of the Browns.. right?

Teddy's Bridge Over Troubled Water

So I should already start pining for the glory days?

Rikki-Tikki-Deadly

No, you should drink the kool-aid for the upcoming glory days. I’ve been drinking it all offseason; it’s delicious.

Teddy's Bridge Over Troubled Water

I’ve been drinking it too. #Raiders&VikesSuperBowl2016

I’d say they’re the Cowboys.

Everybody hates Collingwood.

I have no fucking idea how Aussie sportsbooks stay in business. I nearly always just pick whoever is favored and I’m nearly in last.

Hey, you are not nearly close enough to slipping past me for last.

First the Sharks lose (and looked pretty bad doing so) and now the Roos are doing this? Hopefully the bye comes and they get themselves sorted out.

theeWeeBabySeamus

Goddamn dude. Color me impressed with your “endeavouring” efforts.
Shit, now I feel like a lazy fuck. Even more than normal, I mean.

BrettFavresColonoscopy

Seconded. This was excellent, and tWBS and I are both lazy fucks.
